Bottom line: The 2013 Cadillac XTS proves, if any more proof is needed, that both General Motors and its premium division are back on track. The Cadillac XTS should be placed prominently on the list of anyone considering a large luxury sedan.

Ride, acceleration and handling: It gets excellent marks in all three.

Head-turning quotient: The exterior is stunning to those of us who like sharp lines and angles. But it is also easy to see why some critics dismiss it as “conservative” or, nicer in their thinking, “stately.” Interior design and materials are excellent, as are interior fit and finish.

Body style/layout: The Cadillac XTS is a full-size luxury sedan with four side doors and a traditional notchback trunk. It has a front-engine configuration with either a front-wheel or all-wheel drive system. There are four trim levels — base, Luxury, Premium and Platinum.

Engine/transmission: The XTS comes with a standard 3.6-liter, 24-valve gasoline-direct-injection engine with variable valve timing (301 horsepower, 264 foot-pounds of torque). The engine is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission that also can be shifted manually.

Capacities: Seats five people. Trunk capacity is 18 cubic feet, enough for four golf bags. The gasoline tank holds 19 gallons fuel; regular grade is recommended.

A ctual mileage: Congested New York City driving yielded 15.5 miles per gallon. Highway driving — mostly the Palisades Parkway and Interstate 87 — yielded 25 mpg.

Safety: Standard equipment includes front and rear ventilated disc brakes with upmarket Brembo discs in front; four-wheel anti-lock brake protection; emergency braking assistance; electronic brake-force distribution; side and head air bags; electronic stability and traction control; automatically cornering headlamps; high-intensity-discharge headlamps; a six-month subscription to the OnStar emergency communications system; and tire pressure monitoring.

Price: Prices for the 2013 Cadillac XTS sedan range from $44,075 for the base XTS with front-wheel drive to $60,385 for the XTS Platinum with all-wheel drive. The tested Premium XTS with all-wheel drive carries a base price of $55,810 with an estimated dealer’s invoice price of $52,740. Price as tested is $57,725, including $995 for optional “crystal red tintcoat” exterior paint and a $920 destination charge.
