Live, Interview Show Hosted by Nia-Malika Henderson

WASHINGTON—July 29, 2013—The Washington Post announced today the debut of On Background, an interactive, in-depth interview show exploring compelling Washington news topics. Hosted by PostTV’s Nia-Malika Henderson, the first show features a discussion on the economic impact of immigration reform with Tamar Jacoby, president and CEO of ImmigrationWorks USA, and Jack Martin, director of special projects for FAIR.

“Nia taps into conversations that are happening on Twitter in real time to ask the smart questions people really want answered,” said Andrew Pergam, Senior Editor of Video at The Washington Post. “It’s a show that moves the conversation forward and gets to the center of what's truly going on in Washington.”

On Background’s interactive format focuses on discussions before, during, and after the show with an online community of smart, engaged participants via social media. The show airs Monday-Friday at 12:30pm and will showcase conversations with newsmakers, political insiders, and journalists from The Post newsroom and beyond. After the 30 minute long live show has aired, it will be edited down to shorter clips available for later viewing and easier sharing.

On Background is the latest Web show on, which offers users a more streamlined viewing experience adapted for every platform, navigation of content by shows or latest news topics. The new video-centric site also highlights trending clips and includes Post original video journalism and partner content.

“We’re going to use the power of the social Web to go beyond the talking points,” said Nia-Malika Henderson, who has covered the White House and the 2012 campaign for The Post. “As a reporter, getting to the heart of the story is something I’ve always been passionate about.”

On Tuesday, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is scheduled joins the show to talk about her legislation on military sexual assault. In Play, another marquee PostTV show hosted by Chris Cillizza and Jackie Kucinich, will launch later this week. Follow @PostTV on Twitter or visit
