Universities pay a consulting company called Ruffalo Noel Levitz to help them analyze large amounts of student data. In this contract with Mississippi State University, the company explains how it collects and processes data. 

At the top of page three (Section 4.B), the company says that it may use data from an unnamed "third-party vendor" and does not make guarantees about the accuracy of that data. Read more about college admissions data mining here
