Did you know when you paid for your morning coffee your transaction was vetted through over 500 data points in less than a second? It happens in the blink of an eye. As soon as you insert your visa card into the reader or tap your mobile device when paying for your latte, information gets transmitted from the card into the terminal. Then the data is sent across Visa's network where 500 unique attributes are analyzed, looking at place, time, amount, type of card, whether it's contactless and whether it's chip, resulting in a zero to 100 risk score. This score assesses the level of potential fraud. Visa sends this information to your bank who takes it from there. They either approve or decline the transaction which happens in a split second. So the only thing you need to worry about is whether the cafe has your favorite brand of oat milk.

At Visa, we make security and reducing all types of payment fraud a priority, no matter the currency. Recently Visa's 24-by-7 monitoring teams stopped a fraud attack that amounted to almost $5 million in attempted crypto transactions. When a crypto exchange gets targeted by what we call a threat actor, they send hundreds of thousands of seemingly random transactions. They're looking to get the right combination of card number, expiration date, and a three-digit code on the back so they can buy all sorts of things, including crypto. When Visa detects activity like this, they alert the banks to block these accounts; helping prevent fraud throughout the ecosystem, be it in fiat currency or crypto.

Covid-19 relief, unemployment benefits, and child support can be received quickly and securely through government disbursements. Companies are able to send these disbursements by pushing a digital credential to their recipient's phone, so individuals can access a digitized form of a card. Consumers can then use this card in stores anywhere where mobile wallets are accepted. Because it overrides the need to print a physical credit card, people don't need to wait for the mail to get their money. They can use the card right away, making this initiative another way Visa is a network working for everyone.
