Jasmine Kim is a small business owner, first-time mom and self-proclaimed foodie who loves to travel.

When planning a family vacation, Kim looks for destinations that are not only fun and family-friendly, but also culturally enriching.

“As our family’s generations get further from our Korean roots, it's important to introduce my daughter Olive to not just Korean culture, but Asian culture in general,” Kim said. “I want her to experience different traditions while also having a good time.”

In Orlando, Kim discovered a cultural destination fit for all ages.

“We live in California, so I understand the lure of theme parks, especially with a toddler in tow,” said Kim. “But you’re really missing out on so much culture when you fixate on only one aspect of a city.”

Instead, the Kim family decided to explore a different side of Orlando, enjoying outdoor attractions and learning more about the city’s Asian American Pacific Islander history and culture.

Mills 50 is a popular neighborhood, largely shaped by Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s.

"There are gorgeous murals all throughout Mills 50," said Kim. "The area was really walkable and we spent the entire morning looking at artwork!"

In the afternoon, the Kim family visited Sampaguita, a Filipino inspired ice cream shop, to taste unique flavors like ube and soy sauce butterscotch. In 2023, Yelp named the location one of the best ice cream shops in Florida.

“This was definitely not your typical ice cream shop. I loved that they were putting their own spin to ice cream by incorporating their culture’s flavors. I personally really liked the ube ice cream.”

For travelers wanting to spend time outdoors, Orlando’s Lake Eola Park offers a wide expanse of grass dotted with contemporary art sculptures, tranquil lakefront views and plenty of wildlife.

“Olive absolutely loved Lake Eola Park,” said Kim. “We visited the park every day of our Orlando trip so she could run around, enjoy the playground and see the ducks.”

The pedal-powered swan boats are one of the most popular attractions at Lake Eola Park for visitors wanting to see the lake’s fountain up close. Families can rent the boats from the west side of the park and spend the afternoon paddling the lake’s 23 acres.

Orlando offers a variety of AAPI-owned and operated eateries to choose from. To satisfy her foodie cravings, Kim dined at Bosphorus, a family-owned Turkish restaurant with several locations across the city.

"I really enjoyed the blend of flavors, the decor of the restaurant and the friendly staff," she said.
