Here are some of the most significant and recent developments as the region responds to the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, which causes the disease covid-19:
• Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan froze all non-coronavirus state spending and ordered agencies to identify broad budget cuts Friday after a new analysis showed the pandemic could reduce state tax revenue by nearly $2 billion over the next three months.
• On Good Friday, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s daily news conference took on a religious tone, as she reminded residents to stay home over the holiday weekend. While some states have religious exemptions in their stay-at-home orders, the District does not.
• Maryland recorded its biggest single-day increase in coronavirus-related deaths Friday, reporting 33 additional fatalities. The District reported six additional deaths Friday and Virginia added 12, bringing the total number of fatalities in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia to 331.
• The first D.C. food market has received permission to reopen after Bowser ordered the closure of all open-air food markets unless they present plans for effective social distancing.
