The outcome of Tuesday’s gubernatorial election in Virginia will set the tone for the 2022 midterm elections and how both major political parties move forward during a time of deep division in the country.

Both Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin, the candidates for governor, have urged their supporters to vote early — recasting a spotlight on the absentee balloting process that was at the center of former president Donald Trump’s false claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged for President Biden.
