Man fatally shot in Southeast D.C.

A man was fatally shot early Saturday in the Benning Ridge neighborhood of Southeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

The shooting occurred about 1:10 a.m. in the 4400 block of Falls Terrace SE, near the Benning Terrace Recreation center.

Police identified the victim as Willie Spain Jr., 40, of Southeast Washington. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities provided no other details of the shooting.

Police have also identified a man who was fatally stabbed on Tuesday in the 1300 block of U Street NW as Peter Lokuju, 51, of no fixed address. Police said the victim was found about 11 p.m. and died at a hospital. Police said they arrested a suspect, but that person has not made an initial appearance in court.

There have been more than 200 homicides in the District this year, the highest since 2003.
