Man hospitalized after police shooting in Greenbelt

A man was shot Monday by police in Maryland after they responded to the report of a suicidal person, authorities said.

Greenbelt Police spokeswoman Hannah Glasgow said police responded to the unit block of Plateau Place in Greenbelt for the report of a suicidal man about 10:30 a.m.

According to a preliminary investigation, officers approached the residence and observed a man holding a knife with an approximately 6-inch blade. They told him several times to drop the knife, Glasgow said.

The man then left the residence and moved toward the officers as he raised the knife, Glasgow said. At that time, both officers discharged their weapons, resulting in the subject sustaining injuries.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he was in stable condition Monday night.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the man’s actions, while the Greenbelt Police Department is investigating the actions of the officers. Both officers involved are male, Glasgow said. One has been on the force since 2014 and other since last year.
