A teenage girl was fatally shot Sunday evening in Southeast Washington, D.C. police said.

The victim was 16, said police spokeswoman Alaina Gertz.

The shooting was reported about 6:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of Third Street SE.

No further information was immediately available.

The shooting occurred in a mainly residential area of two- and three-story apartments near Livingston Road, a few hundred yards from the border with Prince George’s County in Maryland.
