Key race

The seat opened by retiring Sen. Richard Burr (R) is a key target for both parties in the battle for control of the Senate. Republicans have chosen Rep. Ted Budd as their nominee, an election denier who was backed by Donald Trump in the May primary. Budd is up against Democrat Cheri Beasley, a former state Supreme Court chief justice who would be North Carolina’s first Black Senator.

U.S. House

North Carolina gained a seat in the redistricting process and the Tar Heel state’s new 13th District is one of the most competitive races this cycle. Redistricting also made the 1st District much more competitive – longtime Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield chose to retire after his district was drawn to be less Democratic and the seat is being targeted by both parties.
