Gavin Newsom wins California gubernatorial general election

Democrat Gavin Newsom has beaten John Cox, a Republican, in the race for governor of California, currently held by Democrat Jerry Brown.

With all precincts reporting, Newsom has 61.9 percent of the vote, followed by Cox with 38.1 percent.

Brown, who cannot run again because of term limits, has been governor since 2011.

California went for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 by a margin of 30 points.
