Jahana Hayes wins Connecticut's 5th Congressional District seat

Democrat Jahana Hayes has beaten Manny Santos, a Republican, in the race for the House seat representing Connecticut's 5th Congressional District, currently held by Democrat Elizabeth Esty.

With all precincts reporting, Hayes has 55.9 percent of the vote, followed by Santos with 44.1 percent.

Esty has represented the district in the House since 2013.

Democrats have gained a majority in the House, with 235 seats in the next Congress. All of Connecticut's House seats have been decided; Democrats have held five seats.

The number of votes cast for Democrats in House races has increased 55.0 percent from the 2014 midterms, compared with an increase of 25.6 percent for Republicans.

The district went for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 by a margin of 4.1 points. Clinton won Connecticut by 13.6 points.
