Rep. Jan Schakowsky wins Illinois's 9th Congressional District seat

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat, has won another term representing Illinois' 9th Congressional District, beating John Elleson, a Republican.

With all precincts reporting, Schakowsky has 73.5 percent of the vote, followed by Elleson with 26.5 percent.

Schakowsky has represented the district in the House since 1999.

Democrats have gained a majority in the House, with 235 seats in the next Congress. All of Illinois's House seats have been decided; two switched hands, all going to Democrats.

The number of votes cast for Democrats in House races has increased 55.0 percent from the 2014 midterms, compared with an increase of 25.6 percent for Republicans.

The district went for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 by a margin of 44.5 points. Clinton won Illinois by 16.9 points.
