One Senate seat is up for election in North Dakota, held by a Democratic incumbent. Voters will also choose a representative for one at-large House seat, currently held by a Republican. See North Dakota’s primary results.
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is probably the most endangered Democratic senator. North Dakota voted for Donald Trump by 36 percentage points in 2016, and Heitkamp may have galvanized Republicans when she voted against the nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Heitkamp apologized in October after a newspaper ad for her campaign listed the names of sexual assault and domestic abuse victims — some erroneously or without permission. Additionally, Republicans were able to coax a top-tier challenger, Rep. Kevin Cramer, into the race after he had previously said he would not run.
