Republican Henry McMaster assumed the governorship in 2017 when Nikki Haley was appointed U.N. ambassador. He fell short of the 50 percent needed to win the nomination outright and was forced into a June primary runoff. Still, he’s favored in the general election over Democrat James Smith.
