Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is the favorite to replace retiring Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R).
Although he issued a damning critique of Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, Romney has shown that he is not eager to take charge of the Trump resistance when two critical senators retire in January. “I will support the president’s policies when I believe they are in the best interest of Utah and the nation,” Romney wrote in the Salt Lake Tribune in June. Salt Lake County Council member Jenny Wilson (D) is challenging Romney.
The Senate supported a bill Dec. 18 that would revise several sentencing laws and retroactively limit the disparity in sentencing guidelines between crack and powder cocaine offenses. President Trump supported the legislation and Jared Kushner, lobbied for it.
