Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is the favorite to replace retiring Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R).
Although he issued a damning critique of Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, Romney has shown that he is not eager to take charge of the Trump resistance when two critical senators retire in January. “I will support the president’s policies when I believe they are in the best interest of Utah and the nation,” Romney wrote in the Salt Lake Tribune in June. Salt Lake County Council member Jenny Wilson (D) is challenging Romney.
Democratic lawmakers on March 27 called for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from cases involving efforts to overturn the 2020 election following revelations that his wife, Virginia Thomas, pressed White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to pursue efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
