Former White House adviser Stephen K. Bannon encouraged two possible candidates — Blackwater founder Erik Prince and investor Foster Friess — to challenge Sen. John Barrasso (R) in the primary. They passed on the race, but self-funded candidate David Dodson decided to run. Businessman Gary Trauner is the only Democrat on the ballot.
Republican businessman Foster Friess, a late entrant into the race, is competing against state treasurer Mark Gordon, attorney Harriet Hageman and several others. The Democratic race includes former state lawmaker Mary Throne. Trump received nearly 70 percent of the state's vote in 2016 and the governorship is expected to stay in GOP hands. Gov. Matt Mead (R) is term-limited.
