California’s is holding a special election to fill the seat vacated by Katie Hill, a Democrat, last year. Hill flipped California’s 25th Congressional District in 2018 after the Republicans controlled it for 28 years. In the March primary, Democratic State Assemblywoman Christy Smith got about 36 percent of the vote and Republican Mike Garcia finished second with about 25 percent of the vote. Steve Knight, who lost to Hill in 2018, finished third in the primary with about 17 percent of the vote. Since no candidate won a majority of the vote in the primary, a runoff election was eventually scheduled for the top two candidates for May 12th. The race is generally considered to be a toss-up.
