Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, a blunt businessman and close ally of President Trump, is trying for a second term in Kentucky this November. He has not been the most popular governor — his own Republican lieutenant governor is suing him, and a Republican state senator is actively campaigning against him.
The Democratic nominee in the race is Andy Beshear, the state’s attorney general and son of former Kentucky governor (and predecessor to Bevin) Steve Beshear. He was one of only two Democrats to win a Kentucky statewide office in 2015. A libertarian candidate, John Hicks, is also on the ballot.
