Texas 6th District U.S. House special election results

The election has ended with a runoff between Wright (R) and Ellzey (R).

In Texas’ 6th Congressional District, voters are selecting a replacement for Ron Wright (R), who died after a battle with cancer and covid-19 on Feb. 7. Susan Wright, who is seeking the seat held since 2019 by her late husband, secured one of the slots in a runoff Saturday evening. She will face state Rep. Jake Ellzey (R) who was later projected to earn the second runoff slot in the 23-way contest — a free-for-all rocked by the last-minute intervention of former president Donald Trump in support of Wright.

Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez narrowly missed that slot and conceded the race on Sunday morning, meaning that her party was locked out of the only House special election this year in a district where the 2020 presidential election results were close. The election operates as a “jungle primary” — all candidates compete against one another on the same ballot. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Wright and Ellzey, the next-highest vote getter regardless of party, will compete in the runoff election.
