Former president Bill Clinton and best-selling author James Patterson are collaborating on a political thriller called “The President Is Missing,” to be released in June 2018.
“Working on a book about a sitting President — drawing on what I know about the job, life in the White House, and the way Washington works — has been a lot of fun,” said Clinton in a statement released Monday. “Working with Jim has been terrific. I’ve been a fan of his for a very long time.” The novel will be published in an unusual joint arrangement by Clinton’s and Patterson’s respective publishers, Alfred A. Knopf and Little, Brown.
The publishers said the book “will offer readers a unique amalgam of intrigue, suspense and behind-the-scenes global drama from the highest corridors of power. It will be informed by insider details that only a President can know.”
Clinton has published several nonfiction books and a memoir, “My Life” (2004), but this will be his first novel. Patterson is the author or co-author of more than 150 books, for adults and young people, which have sold more than 300 million copies. He frequently collaborates with authors.
“Working with President Clinton has been the highlight of my career, and having access to his first-hand experience has uniquely informed the writing of this novel,” Patterson said in his publishers’ statement. “I’m a story-teller, and President Clinton’s insight has allowed us to tell a really interesting one. It’s a rare combination – readers will be drawn to the suspense, of course, but they’ll also be given an inside look into what it’s like to be President.”
Clinton and Patterson plan to promote their novel on a national tour when it’s published next summer.
Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, who handles many high-priced books, negotiated the deal. Terms of the agreement were not being disclosed.
