With a frankly underwhelming harvest of new fall shows, we’re fortunate to have so many good shows making their seasonal return. Here’s a list with premiere dates, with my recommendations noted.

At the top of my can’t-hardly-wait list is Netflix’s “The Crown” (Dec. 8), which resumes the story of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) as she manages the demands of marriage, motherhood and royal duties in a British Empire that’s diminishing in size.

The return of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (Oct. 1) seems well timed to the current American state of crankiness. Maybe Larry David’s problems will be a welcome respite from our own. The makers of NBC’s excellent “This Is Us” (Sept. 26) have kinda-sorta promised that they won’t leave viewers hanging too long on the details of Jack’s untimely demise, but I’ll believe it when I see it — and I’ll definitely make sure to see it.

And Netflix’s “Stranger Things” (Oct. 27) is back to try to prove that it wasn’t just an addictive fluke of retromania. However, when you think about it, the most ’80s move it could make is to deliver a sequel that in no way lives up to the original.
