The Washington PostDemocracy Dies in Darkness

Hey, Who's That Guy?: Paul Wharton, 'Real Housewives of D.C.,' Lifestyle Expert

» EXPRESS: How do you feel about being called the “sixth housewife”?
» WHARTON: Obviously, the term “housewife” is used loosely all the way around. I don’t think I would call any of the women housewives. The term started with Dwight [on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta“]. It’s just a character who makes it a bit more interesting. I think it puts a spin on things. Too many women is sometimes a bit of trouble.

» EXPRESS: How did you meet the Housewives?
» WHARTON: I was really good friends with Lynda. Stacie, I’ve known for about four years. She invited me to a Christmas party at her house; we cocktail, we’re casual friends. Mary and I have been friends for six years. Michaele, I was very close friends with. In fact, I told the show about her, about my friend who has this vineyard and horses and all these fabulous things. Cat is the only one that I didn’t know, because she just recently moved here.

» EXPRESS: Do you all still hang out?
» WHARTON: I hang out with four of them. Michaele, I still really like her but haven’t had an opportunity to properly reconnect since everything happened.

» EXPRESS: Where can you be spotted?
» WHARTON: I’m a member at L2. A couple weeks ago, we were actually all there.

» EXPRESS: How would you describe your style?
» WHARTON: I used to be really into labels, and I would wear things that looked amazing but were very uncomfortable. I don’t feel the need to impress as much as I did when I was in my 20s. I’ve taken a big sigh of relief and wear what’s comfortable. It could be from American Apparel, or it could be from Dolce & Gabbana.

» EXPRESS: Which housewife’s style do you admire most?
» WHARTON: Lynda’s closet is amazing. She has all sorts of things going on in there.

» EXPRESS: You’re known for your fabulous hairstyles. What’s your look of the moment?
» WHARTON: I used to wear my hair curly all the time, which is my go-to style. But when I wear my hair curly, I have to personally do that style. So, I started — which was a mistake — having people blow my hair straight, because I didn’t have to do it. Now, it won’t go back curly! I’m trying to let it chill so I can get that wave back.

» EXPRESS: Can you comment on a certain statement about hair salons in the first episode?
» WHARTON: I know Mary’s at least slightly horrified. But for hairstylists at the top of their game, it’s not being able to do just black hair or white hair; you should just really know hair.

» EXPRESS: After seeing the cameras at the Menzfit event, we’re guessing you’re up to something. Are you getting your own show?
» WHARTON: I’m up to something.
