“Girls” is the most funnoying show on TV. The HBO series (Sundays, 10:30 p.m.) follows four self-absorbed women as they chase their dreams in Manhattan.
Let’s consider the annoyingness factor. Aspiring writer Hannah (Lena Dunham, above) believes her parents should support her while she works as an unpaid intern, and thinks maybe it would be a good thing to get AIDS because “no one is going to call you and say, ‘Did you take an HTML course?’” It is also Extremely Annoying that Hannah lives in a virtually all-white world … in 21st century New York City!
As for her friends, they are pretty annoying. A newly pregnant friend decides to get an abortion, invites Hannah to meet her at the clinic, then doesn’t show up because she is hooking up with a stranger. Hannah’s boyfriend annoyingly pretends that Hannah is an 11-year-old junkie with a Cabbage Patch lunchbox, is cavalier about condoms and believes an appropriate post-coital query is: “You want a Gatorade?”
Yet despite these high levels of annoyingness, sometimes “Girls” is just plain funny. Hannah’s response to the Gatorade question: “What flavor?”
