“Burning Love,” a new web series from Yahoo! Screen, takes everything that’s unintentionally funny about the “The Bachelor” and amps up the ridiculousness. The series comes from the mind of Ken Marino, of the cult Starz series “Party Down.” He plays Mark Orlando, a firefighter with an eighth-grade education who’s looking for love.
“Burning Love” is a faithful parody of the ABC dating show — right down to the way it’s shot, the lavish mansion and the rose ceremony (or in this case, a hose ceremony). Michael Ian Black hosts, and thus far, the series is filled with Marino’s famously funny friends. “Party Down” co-stars Adam Scott and Ryan Hansen have already appeared, and the single ladies vying for Mark’s love are played by a host of female comics (along with actor Ken Jeong and one Hollywood starlet who spends the first episode in a panda suit.)
With new, eight-minute installments on Mondays and Thursdays, “Burning Love” shows that Yahoo!, which streamed Bill Maher’s last comedy special, is a formidable player in the Internet video game. If it’s a hit, Funny or Die and YouTube may need to watch their backs.
