In “Romeo & Juliet,” opening Friday, Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth play the doomed teenagers in love. They’re in pretty good company, judging by the other actors who’ve played the pair.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes
For Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation “Romeo + Juliet,” these two took the story to the gritty, modern streets of Verona. They also took it underwater in one sexy, sweet swimming pool scene.
Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey
Franco Zeffirelli’s lush 1968 R&J is considered one of the best, both by film scholars and by high-school students whose teachers don’t move fast enough to cover up the shot of a topless Hussey.
Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer
Shearer, as Juliet in the 1936 George Cukor-directed version, was the first actress to get an Oscar nomination for a Shakespearean role. Possibly because the 34-year-old had to play 13 (and the guy playing her Romeo was 43).
Paul Panzer and Florence Lawrence
Their turn on the silver screen was a silent one (the film came out in 1908). We assume director J. Stuart Blackton cut Shakespeare’s text with a machete, as the film is only 10 minutes long.
James McAvoy and Emily Blunt
As the voices of gnomes from warring gardens in 2011’s animated “Gnomeo & Juliet,” this duo managed to make it through the ending credits alive.
