I love many things about “Bob’s Burgers” (8:30 p.m., Sun., Fox), the hilarious and warm animated series about a family-run hamburger restaurant. Chief among them is the writing staff’s love of a good (and bad) pun.
If you blink, you might miss the recurring gags that make each episode so funny (or should that be punny?). The title sequence always features a new, pun-tastic business that’s moved into the vacant space next door: the I’d Hit That Boxing Gym, Earth, Wind & Tires, and Yes, Wire Hangers!, for example.
Then there’s the restaurant’s burger of the day menu board, which is where the writers really shine. There’s the She’s a Super Leek Burger; the We’re Here We’re Gruyere, Get Used to It Burger; the Chorizo Your Own Adventure Burger and so on.
As someone who works with words for a living, I can assure you that a lot of work goes into puns. Sometimes it entails coming up with the one that will make your co-workers cringe the most, but that’s part of what makes it so fun.
I enjoy when we toss puns back and forth while brainstorming a headline. It’s a word game that forces you to be creative, clever and (hopefully) funny. Usually, though, I’ll settle for punny.
