Five films featuring volcanos that are not ‘Pompeii’

In “Pompeii,” out Friday, a (spoiler) volcano (spoiler) erupts and (spoiler) people run away and/or (spoiler) die. Really, nothing adds heat to a movie like a volcano.

‘Dante’s Peak’
1997 was a big year for lava, as both this film and “Volcano” came out. Though with this one, the filmmakers decided to at least try on the name.

‘Volcano’
This Spurt of Hurt seemed to be a bit more challenging than most, since it appears suddenly in downtown L.A. And you thought our traffic was bad! Thank you! Tip your waitress!

‘The Core’
This 2003 film isn’t technically about a volcano, because volcanoes make sense. It’s about a team who must drill into the Earth’s molten core (where it’s hot, like a volcano) to start it spinning again. Because apparently stopping is a thing it can do.

‘Joe Versus the Volcano’
Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks star in this very weird 1990 film, in which he agrees to take a splash into an island volcano because he’s dying anyway. Of course, he falls in love on the way there. On the way to the island. Not, like, on his way down.

‘2012’
“2012” came out in 2009, just to give us three years to worry about what would happen if John Cusack couldn’t save us all. With all the ways to get killed in this movie, death by lava actually starts to look like a pretty good option.
