The best summer events in the D.C. area

(John Martz/For Express)

We spent all winter cowering in our homes. Now it’s time to head into the great outdoors for some summer fun and much-needed vitamin D.

Or maybe you don’t want to go outdoors and drink in the humidity. Good thing there are plenty of places (including your house) where you can hunker down, blast the AC and wait for the sweet, sweet relief that autumn brings.

We’ll be posting sections of the guide through Monday.

Read now!

Stage: Several of the season’s theater options come courtesy of the movies: ‘Dirty Dancing,’ ‘Carrie,’ ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast.’

Exhibits: Seeming mundanities like grain and yarn join high-art sculpture and Shakespearean scholarship in this summer’s museum mix.

Music: Bey and Jay are coming! As are One Direction, Boyz II Men, Billy Joel and some country-music people.

Comedy: Marvel at a comedian with five kids, a married duo, a Canadian throwback and Tracy Morgan.

Fitness: Whether you want to race alongside firefighters, in a suit jacket or down a chocolate syrup slide, there’s a competition somewhere in this list for you. Or do yoga! There’s also lots of yoga.

TV: Go ahead, stay inside and catch up on some of the year’s most anticipated television, including ‘Big Brother,’ ‘The Killing’ and ‘The Musketeers.’

Film: You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be glad you don’t live in a dystopian world or on a planet of apes. Plus: a schedule of the D.C. area’s many outdoor screening series.

Books: High-stakes poker, Mars exploration and rare vinyl are among publishers’ topics of choice for the season.

Festivals: We’ve got festivals from way outside the Beltway and festivals from very inside the Beltway. Get ready to eat and drink — a lot.

Eating outside: These new restaurants provide diners with just the right amount of sun exposure.

Coming soon!

Sports: All the balls you care to watch someone bounce, kick, hit or throw.
