Millennials may really have taken over the District. Exhibit A: The scene at the new H&M on Connecticut Avenue today. Of the hundreds of shoppers who swarmed the grand opening of the store, known for affordable yet trendy duds, most seemed to be in their 20s. And few mourned the passing of the space’s previous tenant, Filene’s Basement, the discount department store that shuttered in 2011.

Here’s what a few first-day shoppers got:

How would you describe your personal style? “I like to wear a lot of prints. I like things that are vibrant and urban.”

Do you miss Filene’s Basement? “I have no idea what that is.”

What did you get? “A shirt. It’s my favorite color.”

How would you describe your personal style? “I try to be trendy without looking like a teenager.”

Do you miss Filene’s Basement? “I liked Filene’s Basement better. They had designer clothes.”

What did you get? “I got this striped shirt. It’s lightweight, it’ll go with anything, and it’s $5.”

Do you miss Filene’s Basement? “I used to go to Filene’s Basement when I was younger. I do miss it. I lost my secret denim spot.”
