The “hot mess” pizza at Frankly … PIzza! is made with mozzarella, pickled jalapenos, caramelized onions, bacon, Gruyere and Romano.

In 2011, Frank Linn started selling pizzas at Montgomery County, Md., farmers markets out of a wood-burning oven latched to his SUV.

Last July, he opened Frankly … Pizza!, where he churns out an expanded offering of the same charred pies (10417 Armory Ave., Kensington, Md.; 301-832-1065, franklypizza.com).

Pizzas like the “hot mess” (with mozzarella, pickled jalapenos, caramelized onions, bacon, Gruyere and Romano, above) get a quick kiss of heat from the oak-burning oven in the teeny kitchen before hitting the plate.

Most meats are cured in-house (including the chewy, smoky, thick-cut bacon), and the marinara sauce is made from a family recipe that dates back 80 years. The place is a favorite for families, so expect lots of little ones.
