The owners of Union Kitchen, a food incubator in Northeast D.C., are readying to open a corner market-meets-grocery store in Capitol Hill at 583 Third St. NE.

The space, named Union Kitchen Grocery, will predictably carry 200-plus products prepared by Union Kitchen members, including Capital Kombucha, Undone Chocolate and Gouter tonics.

“It allows us to put our products in front of the consumer in one place,” says Cullen Gilchrist, who co-owns Union Kitchen with Jonas Singer.

Additionally, Union Kitchen Grocery will sell meats and freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner to-go as well as produce in partnership with Healthy Corners, a program through DC Central Kitchen which helps make fresh fruits and vegetables available in food deserts.

The 1,000-square-foot market, with some indoor seating and ample patio space, will round out its offerings with craft beer, wine and a full coffee program similar to that at Blind Dog Cafe, a cafe in Shaw that Gilchrist and Singer also co-own with Noah Karesh. Beans will be provided by Compass Coffee.

“It’s not a bougie take on a corner store,” says Gilchrist. “We’ll have a nice mix of local products and standards,” including Cheez-Its and Coke beverages.

The two hope to open the business in late May.
