On Wednesday, Post Sports tried to figure out who is the most popular current athlete in D.C.

Using a point system (five points for a first-place vote to one point for a fifth-place vote), here’s the Post Sports consensus top-five list. Contributors included Scott Allen (D.C. Sports Bog), Matt Bonesteel (Early Lead), Neil Greenberg (Fancy Stats), Missy Khamvongsa (sports multiplatform editor), Sarah Larimer (staff writer), Marissa Payne (Early Lead), Kelyn Soong (sports news aide), Dan Steinberg (sports columnist), Alexa Steele (assignment editor) and Clinton Yates (D.C. Sports Bog).

1. Bryce Harper (49 out of 50 points)
2. John Wall (29 out of 50)
3. Alex Ovechkin (25 out of 50)
4. Paul Pierce (19 out of 50)
5. Robert Griffin III (18 out of 50)

Others receiving votes: Jayson Werth (4 points), Ryan Zimmerman (2), Marcin Gortat (2), Bradley Beal (1), Ryan Kerrigan (1)

But if we were to look at the next group of D.C. athletes, who would make the cut? Here’s my list from Nos. 6-10:

6. Jayson Werth — I mean his beard has its own Twitter account with more than 17,000 followers, and a Jayson Werth garden gnome is being sold on eBay for $100.

7. Ryan Kerrigan — No D.C. team comes close to the popularity of the Redskins, so shouldn’t their top young player at least crack the top 10?

8. Bradley Beal — After averaging 23.4 points a game in the playoffs, Beal seems ready to take that next step. An All-Star nod could be in his near future.

9. Marcin Gortat — We can all dream of one day having an action figure of ourselves. For Gortat, that’s a reality.

10. Bill Hamid — The 2014 MLS goalkeeper of the year is a homegrown star and he has United atop the East standings for a second straight season.

And here’s what Post readers had to say when asked: Who is D.C.’s most popular active pro athlete?
