“I couldn’t have written it better,” she says. “He was backstage and I was giving him my congratulations — I’m a massive Nationals fan — and he’s like, ‘The World Series? That’s nothing. This is your World Series!’ It was a whirlwind of a day and I couldn’t have been more thrilled.”
The Silver Spring native spent five years as the executive chef at Bluejacket and was competing in the charity event for the first time — a dream come true, much like her new job. “My career was always driving toward doing Middle Eastern food,” says Afram, which makes the Michelin-starred Maydan a natural fit.
When she finds time for another dream day, the Wheaton resident will spend it with her wife, Joyce, and their two dogs, Izzy and Eevee, doing things that normally pass them by. “I think that it’s funny as locals how often we miss the really spectacular things in the thick of when they’re happening around us,” she says.
Wheaton has some pretty awesome food, and I would probably indulge in a panino sub from Filippo’s Italian Specialties. I’ve been getting it for the past 30 years of my life. It’s classic and it’s been exactly the same ever since. It’s my quintessential sandwich, honestly. The first time I had it was with my mom. I was probably 5 years old. We didn’t eat a ton of meat growing up. So any occasion was a treat. I was like, ‘Mortadella is my life!’ after that.
I want some Turkish coffee. I don’t know how I’d get it, but it would miraculously appear. Thomas Market in Wheaton has phenomenal coffee selection, actually.
I have really taken up this scooter trend, even though I did eat it the first time I did it. I got a little too confident. In this world, they will have scooters for dogs, and my wife and I and our dogs are hitting up Nationals Park. I don’t want there to be a game and I want Sean Doolittle and Max Scherzer to throw me batting practice. Maybe we can do, like, a lightsaber battle, I mean how do you practice with Sean Doolittle?
It’s a perfect spring day and the cherry blossoms are in peak season at the Tidal Basin. And there are no tourists and we get to scoot around the cherry blossoms and catch Pokémon [in Pokémon Go].
I think it’s time for dessert. My favorite desserts are by Paola Velez at Kith/Kin. She is the baddest a-- pastry chef in the city, her desserts are so good. I don’t remember what it was exactly but I had this hard shell semifreddo that she did with coconut oil. It was just so cool. My wife always wants me to take her on dessert dates, so this fits in pretty nicely.
Then we’re going to the National Arboretum to nap outside with the dogs. We’ll take selfies and try to get the dogs to look into the camera at the same time.
Let’s go to Coconut Club for dinner. I’m definitely getting the spam sandwich because I love sandwiches and if it’s my day, I’m just gonna eat sandwiches all day. We’d have a couple of drinks out of coconuts. The sun’s probably going down and that’s a beautiful spot — that whole Union Market area — for the sunset.
I think we’re gonna go have more drinks. We’re gonna go to Adams Morgan to Green Zone to drink some arak. It’s like a Middle Eastern ouzo. It’s my favorite drink and I turned my wife into a fanatic as well.
We’re probably close to done but you know what, we’re in Adams Morgan and Tattoo Paradise is right there. And I gotta commemorate the day with a tattoo. I’ve gotten over 20 tattoos between their two locations. This time, I’m getting a dog on a scooter.
