High heel race

If there’s any Halloween party you go to this year, make it the 25th annual Dupont high heel race. The party starts about 6 p.m., when men dressed to the nines in ladies’ apparel start showing off and the spectators gather. Grab a bite at the food truck rally, and get situated before the race begins at 9 p.m.

6 p.m. 17th Street between Church and R streets NW. 202-441-1474.

Vienna Halloween parade

Now in its 65th year, the Vienna Halloween parade is a family-friendly tradition. Little ghosts and goblins lead the pack; to enter your costumed child, meet at Virginia Commerce Bank at 374 E. Maple Ave. before start time.

7 p.m. Maple Avenue from Branch Road to Center Street, Vienna.

Caryl Sherpa

Sometimes when you go trekking in Nepal, you come home with a sherpa. Or at least that’s what happened to author Caryl Sherpa (yes, that’s her married name). The veteran world traveler and author of “I Taste Fire, Earth, Rain: Elements of a Life With a Sherpa” speaks about her experiences.

7 p.m. One More Page Books, 2200 N. Westmoreland St., No. 101, Arlington. 703-300-9746.

Last chance for Bauhaus

Today, the Bauhaus design school is mostly associated with minimalist architecture. But students at the German academy studied everything from stained glass to wallpaper to costume design. The National Gallery of Art’s Bauhaus show closes Friday, so it’s your last chance to see the collection of 27 books and journals that detail the school’s philosophy.

National Gallery of Art, Fourth Street and Constitution Avenue NW. 202-737-4215.

Glen Echo Fall Frolic

There’s a little something for everyone at this Halloween-themed family event at Glen Echo. In addition to a display of pumpkins ornately decorated by resident artists, the festival features performances, seasonal crafts, ghost-making and a costume parade at 3:30 p.m.

1-4 p.m. Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo. 301-634-2222. Free admission.

Spirits in Black

For some strange reason, heavy metal goes well with Halloween. If you’re in the mood for some good old-fashioned head-banging, head to American Ice Company, where the weekly Spirits in Black metal party gets a ghoulish Halloween makeover. Choose from a Halloween cocktail menu from PS7’s mixologist Gina Chersevani, or enter the costume contest.

8 p.m. American Ice Company, 917 V St. NW. 202-758-3562. Free admission.
