On Tuesday afternoon, a white pickup truck sped down a protected bike path and collided with a bus, killing eight people and injuring several others. The driver was shot by police and taken into custody; he is expected to survive. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has called the attack an “act of terror,” and a handwritten note found in the truck declared the driver’s allegiance to the Islamic State.

The attack took place on an approximately 20-block stretch of a protected bike path along West Street in Lower Manhattan. The suspect entered the bike path from the roadway at Houston Street, driving south to Chambers Street and exiting his vehicle after colliding with a bus close to Stuyvesant High School.

Officials say the suspected attacker, Sayfullo Saipov, was influenced by the Islamic State and its violent tactics after arriving in this country from Uzbekistan and had been living in Tampa, Fla. Before the attack, the suspect lived in Paterson, N.J., and he rented the truck in that state. Saipov left notes pledging his allegiance to the group, also known as ISIS, authorities said, though they have not identified any direct connections between Saipov and the organization.

According to the Jane’s terrorism events database, there have been 169 attacks since 2009 in which vehicles were used as weapons. The 2016 Bastille Day attack in Nice, France, which killed 86, was the deadliest. The tactic has become a favorite of the Islamic State in Europe.
