The maps below show 2018 election results in competitive U.S. House districts, as well as how parts of the districts voted in the 2016 presidential election. Among 22 competitive districts with precinct-level results available Wednesday afternoon, several flipped from Republicans to Democrats, while the GOP held onto or flipped some others. In six races a winner had not been declared.

Precincts cover small areas and can show voting trends more precisely. The circles on the maps are sized based on the margin of victory for the Democrat or Republican in each precinct. When available, they can provide more insight into what caused a district to flip — or not.

Moderate Republican who backed Obamacare repeal falters

Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell edged Rep. Carlos Curbelo, a moderate Republican who has represented this South Florida district since 2015. Mucarsel-Powell, a former medical associate dean, turned Curbelo's vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act into a major campaign issue. Curbelo led an unsucessful effort to force an immigration-overhaul vote and had worked to distance himself from President Trump. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won this district by 16 points, and Curbelo won by 12.

Too close to call in the Atlanta suburbs

Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Lucy McBath, who became a gun-safety activist after her son was shot and killed, were locked in a virtual tie, with McBath up by about 3,000 votes early Wednesday morning. Handel won what was the most expensive House race ever in a special election in 2017. Trump narrowly won this district in 2016, which is why the maps look very similar.
