How President Trump’s impeachment unfolded in the House and Senate
The House sent two articles of impeachment against President Trump – for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – to the Senate on Jan. 15. The trial began in earnest on Jan. 21, with the Senate voting on trial procedures and rules and eventually voting to acquit on Feb. 5. Trump is the third U.S. president in history to be impeached.
House Democrats crafted the articles of impeachment after weeks of closed-door depositions with 17 government witnesses, and televised public hearings with many of those officials, relating to the president’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
