How the robots work

Human controllers sit at a computer. The most advanced robots are operated through a video game-like interface. If the wireless connection goes down, the robot can still complete basic tasks, like opening a door, on its own.

How the robots fared

“Part of what’s going on is an exploration of the design space by different teams,” said Gill Pratt, DARPA's program manager. Twenty-two of the robots are shaped roughly like people, with a head, arms and legs. The others are shaped more like animals or rovers. Pratt said some are more stable and slow to complete tasks, while others are less stable and can work faster. The biggest difference between the robots is their level of autonomy and the sophistication of the user interfaces that researchers use to control them.

The course was challenging for some of the robots — many fell down, and only three robots completed all eight tasks. Others stalled out before they began the clhallenge and did not get any time on the clock. Here's how each robot fared:

The base for these seven robots was developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA. It is equipped with radar, cameras and visual sensors.
