Methodology

The Washington Post identified people involved in applications to grow marijuana by filing public records requests with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. The records released by the commission include the name, title and contact information for the primary contact for each application, and two forms that were required of all employees, owners and investors with more than a 5 percent stake in the companies. The first form is a background-check authorization. The second requires the employee, owner or investor to list states where they have ties to other marijuana-related businesses. Political, business and law enforcement affiliations and other information included in the database came from interviews, public-records searches and news reports. This database will be updated with additional information as the application process continues.
