Since the Metro opened in 1976, six different lines have opened, totaling 117 miles with the opening of the Silver Line last year. Most growth happened in the first couple of years.

38 TOTAL STATIONS
The Orange Line begins service to Ballston, adding four stations—Court House, Clarendon, Virginia Sq-GMU and Ballston—and 2.63 miles to system.
Aug. 25, 1984
54 TOTAL STATIONS
Red Line begins operating 6.81-mile segment to Grosvenor, including Tenleytown-AU, Friendship Heights, Bethesda and Medical Center stations.
Sept. 22, 1990
64 TOTAL STATIONS
Red Line is extended to Wheaton, opening up some of the deepest stations in the system, Forest Glen (the deepest) and Wheaton.

75 TOTAL STATIONS
Service begins service on 7.96-mile Green Line segment that includes West Hyattsville, Prince George’s Plaza, College Park-U of Md and Greenbelt stations. It connects with Red Line at Fort Totten. This completes 89.5 miles of the 103-mile system.

84 TOTAL STATIONS
A five-station, 6.5-mile segment to Branch Ave. opens, completing the 103-mile, 83-station Metrorail System. Two opening ceremonies are held, one each at Congress Heights and Branch Ave stations. The segment was built in five years.

86 TOTAL STATIONS
The Blue Line is extended to Largo Town Center. The segment adds 3.2 miles to the system and is the last significant extension of Metrorail until 2014.

91 TOTAL STATIONS
The Silver Line opens to the public, extending Metrorail from Largo Town Center to Wiehle-Reston. The system has currently 117 miles.

In the first three years, Metro constructed more than 30 miles, 26 percent of its total current coverage.
In almost a decade, the system added only 11.7 miles.
