The coastline at Yaquina Head, Ore., will be the first place in the “path of totality,” the 69- to 73-mile-wide area where viewers can expect to see the moon entirely block the sun. People outside this path will see a partial eclipse.

Unfortunately for residents of Oregon’s historically cloudy coast, NOAA scientists have calculated the chances of a clear day at about 44 percent.
A few hours east, however, the odds increase dramatically. Because the Cascade Range creates a significant rain shadow across central and eastern Oregon, chances are high that the view will be unobstructed.

Viewers in Madras, Ore., about two hours from Portland, will be able to watch the moon’s shadow race across Mount Jefferson to the west as it is enveloped in totality 17 seconds before Madras.

If you want to watch an eerie event from an eerie place, here’s your chance. Lime, Ore., is a ghost town that was abandoned after its hulking cement plant closed in 1980.
“Seeing a partial eclipse and saying that you have seen an eclipse is like standing outside an opera house and saying that you have seen the opera,” said astronomer Jay M. Pasachoff, as quoted in “Totality: Eclipses of the Sun.”

Just south of the path of totality is the Craters of the Moon National Monument, where lava fields have been used as training grounds for astronauts. Its eclipse-day festivities will be in nearby Arco, Idaho.

Many towns and cities along the path of totality hope to capitalize on the influx of visitors. Idaho Falls, Idaho, has planned a four-day outdoor country music festival called Moonfest.

Ski resorts in Jackson, Wyo., are selling tickets to view the eclipse from a chairlift or gondola.
The Wind River Indian Reservation covers more than 2 million acres and is home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. Visitors need permits to view the eclipse here.

Savvy eclipse chasers will be watching from Western states, according to Michael Zeiler of GreatAmericanEclipse.com. Casper, Wyo., is expected to be crowded thanks to its large-town amenities, elevation (5,200 feet) and historically dry August weather.

Western Nebraska may be a good place to catch a clear view, perhaps at Carhenge (yep, like Stonehenge, but with cars) in Alliance. Some scholars think the formation of stones and holes at Stonehenge may have allowed its builders to predict eclipses.
About 20 federal highways are in the path of totality, according to the Federal Highway Administration, including all 260 miles of Interstate 80 in Nebraska between Paxton and Lincoln.

Dannebrog, Neb., was founded by Danes and is famous around the state for the Danish Baker’s pizza. Owner Tom Schroeder — “I’m neither Danish nor a baker, but Dannebrog is not known for its veracity” — says he will sell slices before and after the eclipse but not during because he’ll be outside watching.
McCool Junction, Neb., won’t get McCold, but the air temperature during totality drops by an average of about 12 degrees Fahrenheit, according to astrophysicist Fred Espenak.

Bill Nye the Science Guy will be watching from the Homestead National Monument of America, which will experience totality for 2 minutes 34 seconds.
The county visitor’s bureau in Hiawatha, Kan., is selling eclipse T-shirts that say “I Blacked Out in Brown County.”
St. Joseph, Mo., like many places along the path of totality, is billing itself as the best place to watch. Its website helpfully mentions that another total eclipse won’t cover the area for 189 years.

The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is one of nine such trails that run through the path of totality. The portion at Jefferson City, Mo., will go dark for 2 minutes 29 seconds.

St. Louis’s iconic Gateway Arch will be just outside the path of totality, but much of the city will see the full eclipse. “If you’re at the 90 percent line of the eclipse, you’re seeing 1,000th of the spectacle,” said eclipse-chaser Michael Zeiler.
Carbondale, Ill., bills itself as the “Eclipse Crossroads” because it will be in the path of totality for the 2017 and 2024 eclipses.

Superman needs the sun to recharge his powers, so it’s no wonder Metropolis, Ill., home of Superman, says one of its prime eclipse-viewing areas is near the massive statue of the native Kryptonian at city hall.
Totality will last the longest over Shawnee National Forest — 2 minutes 44 seconds, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. The city with the longest duration will be Hopkinsville, Ky., with 2 minutes 40 seconds.

The eclipse will conveniently arrive during the Kelly, Ky., Little Green Men Days festival, which commemorates a brawl between space aliens and a group of Kelly residents on Aug. 21, 1955. (Read the local newspaper’s account here. You will not be disappointed.)
The Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp.’s Total Solar Eclipse playlist includes “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers, “Space Oddity” by David Bowie and the Johnny Cash version of “You Are My Sunshine.”

The path of totality includes portions of 20 national parks, including the entire western half of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
If you want to combine the eclipse with a workout, you can hike four miles of the Appalachian Trail to the top of Albert Mountain.
Scientists plan to release a camera-equipped balloon from Clemson University that will livestream both the sun’s corona and the shadow on Earth from 100,000 feet in the air.
The last place on land you can catch the total eclipse is at Cape Island at South Carolina’s Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.
