A video clip posted on Twitter showed a gunman opening fire outside a McDonald’s near the shopping complex as people dashed for cover. The man appeared to fire on passersby with a handgun, seemingly at random.

The Munich mall is near the city’s Olympic Stadium, the centerpiece of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games that become known for tragedy when Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage and killed 11 of them.

Police later determined that the attack at Munich’s Olympia shopping complex was apparently carried out by a lone gunman, an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich, and that he committed suicide about half a mile away. Two days after the rampage, police reported that the gunman had no ties to the Islamic State or other extremist groups and had planned his attack for a year. Fears that there might be up to three attackers were mainly based on reports of two people speeding away from the crime scene in a car after the attack, but they have since been identified.
