Around the area: Paul VI Catholic (4-6) is no longer a WCAC member for football and will play an independent schedule under first-year Coach Gordon Leib, whose Madison teams reached the playoffs eight times in 10 years. Leib is the Panthers’ third coach in three years. Paul VI’s last winning season was in 2000. . . . Ireton (3-7), also an independent, lost five games by eight points or fewer last season. The Cardinals bring back 15 starters, including WR Malcolm Westbrook (school-record 47 catches), 2,000-yard passer P.J. Zingler, RB Moses Webb (437 rushing yards, 28 catches) and C Eddie D’Antuono. . . . Former Avalon School coach Jerry Sarchet takes over at John Paul the Great (9-2). The Wolves open with the two teams they lost to last season. The Perroots brothers, Tyler and Zach, combined to rush for more than 1,000 yards. . . .
In the Virginia AA Evergreen District, Fauquier (8-3) returns 16 starters. OL Luca Carrillo heads an experienced line and WR Darius Stanford has caught 60 balls in each of the past two seasons. . . . Fourth-year program Kettle Run (4-6) could be ready to make a move behind RB Josh Tapscott (660 yards) and LB John Piette, the team’s top tackler a year ago. . . . Brentsville (1-9) has a new coach, Tommy O’Neill, who takes over a program that has won three games in three years. The Tigers lost so many students to new Prince William County school Patriot that they will not field a freshman team. The lines are a strength, with Brandon Thompson leading the way. . . .
In the Virginia A Bull Run District, Joe McElfish returns as coach for Manassas Park (7-4). He led the Cougars to a state runner-up finish in 1986 and inherits 1,300-yard rusher John Byrd. The Cougars will play only nine games this season because Rappahannock decided not to field a team. . . . George Mason (1-9) enters the season on a seven-game losing streak. . . . The only returning starters for Quantico (4-5) are QB John Tagliabue and lineman Ron Harrell.
