Marisa Kashino, editor of The Washington Post’s The Home You Own, answered your questions about our new vertical on Thursday. The new service-oriented line of coverage launched this month. Articles will empower readers to make smart decisions about the way they live in their spaces and tackle questions big, small and existential about maintaining a home — including cleaning, furnishing, gardening, and the ways those things intersect with the environment, our finances, our mental health and our relationships.

Kashino joined The Post from Washingtonian, where, as senior editor, she managed the magazine’s real estate and home design coverage and wrote features. Her favorite home topics include midcentury modern architecture, hunting for vintage furniture, and houseplants. Here are some of the questions she answered:
