Chief Financial Officer Natwar M. Gandhi has served as the District’s fiscal chief since 2000 and operates independently of the mayor and the D.C. Council. Recently appointed to a third term, Gandhi is credited with helping to improve the city’s finances and bond rating, but his agency, particularly the tax office within it, has been criticized in internal reports for weak controls and lax oversight. A D.C. Council hearing to discuss the tax issues is scheduled for Wednesday. Read related article.
