Janney was a shoo-in for portraying ice skater Tonya Harding’s abusive, chain-smoking mother in the biopic. Accepting the trophy, Janney called LaVona Golden a “distinctive, unique mother of a character.”

She thanked Margot Robbie for her “unbelievably brave, fearless portrayal of Tonya … you set the bar for everyone.”

The camera panned to Harding in the audience, who looked a little teary. Janney thanked Harding for sharing her story and said the movie was also a story about class in America, as well as the perception of truth in the media.
