Shower Beer, brewed by Charlottesville's Champion Brewing, got a gold medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival for the best Bohemian-style pilsener. (Champion Brewing)

At long last, spring has arrived in Washington. Buds are coming out. Padded jackets are coming off. There’s no more talk of freeze warnings. Beer drinkers, it’s time for you to put away your bourbon barrel-aged stouts and enjoy something more seasonal.

To welcome the season, I wanted something bright, crisp and clean — a baseball brew. The first thing I reached for was Shower Beer, a Czech-style pilsener from Charlottesville’s Champion Brewery. I was partially influenced by the can’s colorful design, which is warm orange with a bright yellow rubber duck, perfectly matching the flowers arriving outside.

This is a classic, easy-drinking pils, with floral, grassy hops; dry, cracker-like malt flavors; and a bit of citrus. There’s a more-ish sweetness that invites another sip. Shower Beer won’t overload your palate, but it’s perfect at what it does. For that, it received a gold medal in the Bohemian-style pilsener category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.
