Oktoberfest lagers and pumpkin ales are common in autumn, but they’re not the perfect autumnal beers. At this time of year, you need a crisp, flavorful brew than can stand up to the season’s hearty soups, root vegetables and game but is also solid enough to be sipped on its own while you’re tailgating or after raking leaves on a crisp afternoon.

My favorite for fall at the moment is Foxy, a copper-red IPA from Baltimore’s Union Craft Brewing. Full of rich toffee, resinous pine and earthy hops, it’s a beer that smells — and tastes — perfect for a brisk day. Although a toasted, spicy malt is the star, it’s balanced with a grapefruit bitterness that makes for a truly enjoyable seasonal beer.
